At Muen International Airport in southern South Korea, a passenger airliner crashed on the runway during landing. This event has now claimed the lives of 151 people. The collision occurred early on Sunday.
This information regarding the local firefighting department in South Korea was revealed by Reuters. Two persons have been retrieved alive thus far, according to a statement from the fire department.
Six crew members and 175 passengers were on board the Jeju Air flight when the tragedy occurred. The plane, which was traveling from Thailand, suffered an accident when it landed at Muan International Airport.
Additionally, two people were saved alive, according to the nation's news agency Yonhap. Rescue efforts are in progress. There is concern that the death toll might rise.
Authorities are performing rescue operations at the rear of the downed aircraft, an airport spokesman told Reuters.
Images from the local media showed smoke and flames emanating from several areas of the downed aircraft.
Following recent political unrest, Choi Sang-mok, the acting president of South Korea, has directed that the rescue effort be conducted properly, according to his office. Choi Sang Mok became the nation's acting leader on Friday.
